Greetings Chemistry 222!

Items Due During Week 8:

    ALL SECTIONS:
  • Reminder: when using the gas constant, R, use only 8.3145 J/mol*K or 0.082057 L*atm/mol*K to receive full credit on problems. Other values of R will be graded down, so "use the good versions", ok? :)

Exam II is happening this week, so prepare to show me all that you have learned over the last several chapters - you've got this! If you have any questions, contact me!

Here's what is happening in week 8 of CH 222:

  • Midterm Exam II
    • This midterm exam covers problem sets #4 and #5 (essentially Chapters 9, 10 and 11.)
    • The midterm will have 20 multiple choice questions and four or five short answer questions. You will not need a scantron to complete the exam, but you will need to mark your answers clearly on the exam itself.
    • The first and last pages of the exam deserve some comment. The first page of the midterm will include an integrity statement that you will be required to sign. Signing the integrity statement implies that you have not received (and will not be giving) any information on the midterm exam to others that might imply cheating; a failure to sign the integrity statement grants an automatic score of zero, so make sure the first thing you do is to sign the statement. The last page of the midterm exam will be a scoring page which will be filled out by the instructor when the exam has been graded; you do not need to complete anything on this page. An example of the integrity statement and grading sheet for Section 01, Section H1 and Section W1 are available.
    • Reminder: when using the gas constant, R, use only 8.3145 J/mol*K or 0.082057 L*atm/mol*K to receive full credit on problems. Other values of R will be graded down, so "use the good versions" exclusively.
  • Section 01: Midterm II
    • Section 01 will take the midterm during recitation on Monday, February 26 at 1:10 PM.
    • Bring your calculator! Cell phones and tablets are not allowed while taking exams.
    • You will have access to a periodic table and scratch paper.
    • One (double sided) single page (8.5 x 11 inches) of notes is allowed on this exam (staple it to the back of the midterm at the end of the exam.)
    • The midterm will last from 1:10 PM until 3 PM.
  • Section H1: Midterm II
    • Section H1 will take the midterm during recitation on Wednesday, February 28 at 1:10 PM.
  • Section W1: Midterm II
    • Section W1 will receive access to the midterm Wednesday, February 28 by 8 PM via an email link, and you need to turn it in via email by Friday, March 1 at 9 AM. Check your email Wednesday evening! Email the instructor if you do not get the link to the midterm!
    • Section W1 MUST use a printed (hard copy) form when completing the exam to avoid a point penalty. Write your hand written answers on the printed exam. Make sure you have a pathway for printing the midterm!
    • Section W1 MUST show all work for ALL questions, including the multiple choice questions. If only the answer is provided, and math is required, you will miss the problem. You will have to draw multiple Lewis structures on this midterm.
    • No collaboration is allowed on this midterm, so do not share exam answers or problem solving strategies with anyone. Collaboration results in a zero for this assignment.
    • Turn the exam in as a single PDF file (I recommend using CamScanner to scan your printed exam in easily and send it over email.) If the exam is not sent as a single PDF file, a point penalty will be required.... contact me if you have any questions, ok?
    • Late exams will be worth zero points; no exceptions... so make sure you get it turned in by the deadline!
  • To Study and Prepare for Midterm Exam II:
    • Watch the Complete Lecture of an Exam Review for the second Midterm Exam here: Midterm II Exam Review
    • Lecture videos for the Exam Review for the second Midterm Exam will be found on YouTube and as a Podcast.
    • A sample exam is available on the Chemistry 222 website under Quizzes and Exams. You can also view the Chapter Guide written for Exam II.
    • Late exams will be worth zero points; no exceptions... so make sure you get it turned in by the deadline!

Also happening during Week 8 in CH 222:

Here's a preview of what's going to be happening during Week #9:

  • This is Class Presentations week!
    • This week you will be giving your Class Presentation and submitting your final Class Presentation paper. The details differ depending on which section you are in, so see below for more information. And remember, the Kinetics I - The Iodination of Acetone lab is due this week as well.
  • Class Presentations for Section 01 and Section H1:
    • The Paper: Details on the requirements for the written paper can be found in the Class Presentations page and in the FAQ.
    • The Presentation: You will be giving a roughly five minute presentation to your class during recitation (Section 01: Monday, March 4 at 1:10 PM in AC 2501; Section H1: Wednesday, March 6 at 1:10 PM in AC 2501.)
    • We will start promptly so make sure you are there on time. A part of your grade includes full attendance on this day, so be there and don't be late, ok?
    • During your presentation you can use the podium Windows computer in AC 2501 for PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.-type presentations, or you can just 'chalk talk' your presentation (use the chalk board, or visuals, etc.) Any questions? Let me know!
    • A part of your grade in Section 01 and Section H1 will be completing and turning in the "Class Presentation Reviewer Guide." I will provide the guide before the presentations start (or you can bring one yourself, your call).
    • Your Class Presentation paper will be due at the time of your Class Presentation. Print it before class starts; printing after would invoke a point penalty.
    • The "Kinetics I - The Iodination of Acetone (in class)" lab is also due at the time of your Class Presentation.
    • If you have any questions, please let me know!
  • Class Presentations for Section W1:
    • The Paper: Details on the requirements for the written paper can be found in the Class Presentations page and in the FAQ.
    • The Presentation: You will need to submit a recording of yourself giving your Class Presentation. I recommend using YouTube (but if you prefer a different platform, that is ok too)... email me the link to your presentation so I can view it later (no large video files will be accepted, only links.)  I do not expect the quality of a Hollywood movie, but I do want to see you talking about the subject you researched in an organized and interesting manner. Try to have your presentation be about five minutes long, and I MUST see YOU presenting (not just a PowerPoint-like voice over, I want to see YOU.)
    • Here is a page with examples of Class Presentations from CH 222.
    • Here is a page showing how you can make your video on a variety of platforms (including YouTube, Zoom, etc.)
    • Your Class Presentation paper and Class Presentation video (link) will be due on Wednesday, March 6 by 11:59 PM via email.
    • The "Kinetics I - The Iodination of Acetone (online)" lab is also due on Wednesday, March 2 by 11:59 PM via email.
    • Start working on the "Kinetics II - The Iodination Of Acetone (online)" Lab (due next week Wednesday.)
    • If you have any questions, please let me know!
  • We will not be completing a quiz or problem set this week.

Have a great day! Peace, --- Michael
