Greetings Chemistry 151!
I am very pleased to have you in my CH 151 class this quarter, and I look forward to a productive term with you. Please let me know if you have any questions, ok?
For Monday, June 23:
- Nothing is due. Be in room AC 2501 at 8 AM on Monday morning, and I will introduce the class and how it works; we'll talk about Chapter 1 and also work on the Eight Bottles lab.
For Tuesday, June 24:
- Turn in the "Eight Bottles" lab. We will talk about Chapter 1 and Chapter 2.1 - 2.3 (isotopes, atomic number and the periodic table) before we start the Problem Solving lab (which is due Monday, June 30 at 8 AM.)
For Wednesday, June 25:
- Problem
Set #1 will be due; we'll talk about it first (and ask questions!) before turning it in. We will take Quiz #1 after we discuss the Problem Set, then I'll talk about Chapter 4.3 (Nomenclature)
In this section we will begin to explore chemistry and what it means to become a chemist. Without the proper tools, no work can be done; and the techniques we will study in this section (significant figures, dimensional analysis, scientific notation, the metric system, the periodic table, etc.) will help us all through this class and beyond.
Here's what is due during week 1 of CH 151:
- Explore the material in Chapter 1, Chapter 2.1 - 2.3 and Chapter 4.3. There are several tools to help you learn the material.... they include:
- Start on Tuesday, June 24: The Problem Solving Lab (this is due on Monday, June 30 at 8 AM.)
- Due Wednesday, June 25: Problem Set #1 which covers problems from Chapter 1 and Chapter 2.
- Take Wednesday, June 25: Quiz #1.
- Quizzes will consist of several 'show your work' questions that will be completed in class. You will have 30 minutes to complete the quiz. You will have access to a periodic table (provided by me) and a calculator, but no notes are allowed.
- Sample Quiz #1 (answers) might prove helpful while preparing for this quiz.
Here's a preview of what's going to be happening during Week #2:
- Explore the material in Chapter 2.4. There are several tools to help you learn the material.... they include:
- Read Chapter 2.4 in the textbook
- Watch the Lecture video for Chapter 2.4 which is found here.
- We will start the Nomenclature Lab on Monday; it will be due Tuesday at 8 AM.
- We will start the Density on Tuesday; it will be due next week Monday (July 7) at 8 AM.
- Problem Set #2 will be due on Wednesday; we will also take Quiz #2 on Wednesday.
I wish you
the best during the new quarter, and let me know if you have any questions.
Peace, --- Michael
