Greetings Chemistry 221!

Everyone now has an element selected for their upcoming Class Presentation. (If you had not selected one by 9 AM Friday yesterday, I assigned an element to you.) You can view your element choice by checking your grades.

Now that you have an element for your class presentation, it is time to start researching the element in earnest. During week 6, you will turn in a "rough draft" of your class presentation paper... to me, this means at least two typed pages (more is great!) showing some initial research on your element. This is a rough draft - not the final version! - I just want to see that you are working on the project and that you are working on the correct element! To find the exact date that your rough draft is due, click here.

Along with the rough draft, you will need to turn in the abstract for at least one peer reviewed scientific paper on your element. Peer reviewed scientific papers are professional research papers which have been checked by other scientists in the same field of study... they should be accurate and reasonable in their assertions. Getting the abstract (a summary of the work completed in the paper) for these papers is free, but getting the entire article often costs money, so just "copy and paste" the abstract for your project. Finding the abstract for a peer reviewed scientific paper is easy; see the "How do I find my two peer reviewed scientific articles?" section on the Class Presentation FAQ . Also pay attention to the correct citation format of your paper... again, see the Class Presentation FAQ for more information.

So, to summarize: during week 6, the Class Presentation Rough Draft needs to include:

  • at least two typed pages of work relating to your chosen element
  • the abstract to at least one peer reviewed scientific article on your element. Use the library's website (link) to find the articles; instructions on how to find the articles can be found in the Class Presentation FAQ (see the "How do I find my two peer reviewed scientific articles?" section.)
  • the "Rough Draft" form, stapled to the front, found here: https://mhchem.org/rd1

Questions? Let me know! Have a great day; peace, --- Michael
