Basic Organic Nomenclature

This page provides introductory exercises in naming organic compounds. It will present the following compound types: a )linear alkanes b) linear mono alkenes c) Linear alkanes with a single functional group d) Esters, ethers and ketones. In order to make them obvious, the functional groups and linking groups will be shown in bold immediately after the carbon which they are attached, with the exception of the left most carbon, where they will be written first.

When entering the name of the compound, please realize the limitations of format within this simple program. The computer will not recognize variations on the presentation or spelling. To familiarize yourself with the required format, you should try a few "Show Answer" problems before beginning. When you press "New Compound", a formula will appear to the right of the table. Enter the name in the cell and press "Check Answer".

Please note: there is a bug in the program which inadvertently adds an additional hydrogen atom after a double bond in some structures. Please ignore this error - it should not be there! - and it will be fixed in the future.
