Melting Ice

This page presents questions where ice (frozen water) is dropped into liquid water. To begin, press "New Problem" and a question will appear. Recall that the heat capacity of liquid water is 4.184 J g-1 oC-1 and the heat of fusion for water is 6010 kJ mol-1. For the first part of the problem, determine whether the ice cube will melt completely. You only get one attempt at this stage; if you answer "No" correctly, the problem is complete and you the correct score increased by 1. If you answer "Yes" correctly, the page moves to the next stage where you need to calculate the final temperature. In this case, a correct score is not provided unless this part is answered correctly also. Pressing "Show Answer" will cause the correct answer to appear and you will no longer be able to submit an answer for that problem.
