This page is an exercise in relating the bond angle to the fractional composition of hybrid orbitals. For hybrids consisting of only s and p orbitals the composition of the hybrid is related to the bond angle by the expression:
where "S" represents the fractional contribution of the s orbital to the hybrid, expressed as a decimal. For example, in sp2 hybridization, S=.33, since the hybrids are one-third s character. When you press "New Problem", either the "Angle" or "S Fraction" cell will fill. The cursor will be in the empty cell. Determine the missing value, enter it in the cell and press "Check Answer". Results appear in the table.
