Colligative Properties

When solutes are dissolved in solvents the physical properties of the resulting solutions differ from those of the pure solvents. These properties are referred to as colligative properties and include boiling point, freezing point, vapor pressure and osmotic pressure. Colligative properties are defined as the properties of a solution that depend only on the number of solute particles per solvent molecule; they are independent of the nature of the solute. This program analyzes the effects of solute dissolution on the boiling and freezing points of water.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Select the solute by clicking on one of the solute option buttons.
  2. Select the amount of solvent by clicking on one of the Mass of water option buttons.
  3. Click on the Add Solute button to add solute in 0.10 g increments.
  4. Different solutes can be compared by choosing a different solute option button.
  5. Click on the Clear Plot button to clear the plots and to start again with new solute and solvent values.
